Where: South Street Seaport, New York City
Watch: Omega Seamaster 1948
When: 2:50 p.m.
To say I've been feeling nostalgic wearing this handsome, small-second Omega Seamaster 1948 and walking it around town this week would be an understatement. The watch is a tribute to the classic Omegas of 1948, delivered to British airmen and sailors after WWII, and the new 70th anniversary edition is so true to the original it almost takes you back there on its own.
A self-winding timepiece in 38mm stainless steel, the Seamaster is (of course) waterproof. Maybe it was the watch that drew me there, but earlier this week I found myself by the water at the South Street Seaport—more specifically, the Seaport's museum. It maintains a fleet of historic ships near the restored counting houses of Schermerhorn Row, and inside, an impressive collection of illustrations and models. Among the historical trappings of the museum, the Omega Seamaster felt right at home. After wearing the watch, I must say I admire Omega even more—not just for nodding to the past, but producing watches that look and feel like their ancestors, now for a whole new generation to enjoy. Bravo.
